Our Mom

Our Mom

There were three of us, my brother Malcolm, (in the middle), my younger sister, Normita, and me. I am the oldest of the three of us. We did some things that got on our mother’s nerves. It is a wonder that we did not drive her into having nervous breakdowns. Here are just two things that we did to her.

One day, I believe it was on a weekend, our mother was chasing Malcolm around the breakfast room table.

“Nan-nanna-nan-na. You can’t catch me!” Malcolm taunted her, as he played cat and mouse with her by running around the table.

Mom became so frustrated. “Dog gone it” she said as she tried to take a short cut by climbing on top of the table. Immediately, the table collapsed. Normita and I were seated on opposite sides of the table. The leaf in the middle gave way and our bowls of ice cream slide down onto the broken leaf. As a result of this incident, we as a family, had to eat our food on the radiator covers until our parents could afford to buy a new table.

We loved to get into mischief late at night in the summertime after our mom went to bed.

On one summer night Malcolm, Normita, and I were playing church in my sister’s crib which was in my bedroom. Malcolm was preaching, and Normita and I were saying, “Amen, amen,” repeatedly.

It was raining. Suddenly, we saw a flash of lightning, heard thunder, and the lights went out. Apparently, God was not pleased with what we were doing.

The three of us leaped out of Normita’s crib, flew onto my bed and started screaming; Mommy, mommy, mommy!”, at the top of our lungs. Our screaming awakened our mom.

Mom ran out of her bedroom with her nursing shoe in her hand.

“I’m tired of hearing this dog gone noise at night!”, she said grumbling under breath. Miraculously, the lights came back on. She hit us repeatedly with her shoe, leaving white ruffle marks on our legs.

“Now, go to bed, all of you. You know that I have to get up early to go to work tomorrow,” our mother declared.

My mom remained strong despite raising three active children. She was caring and kind despite all of her struggles with mental illness.
